ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s student body has elected its Council of Student Leaders (CSL) chair and vice chair for the 2024-25 academic year: Sean Pennington (chair) and Victoria Williams (vice chair), who captured almost 70 percent of the vote.
“We are so grateful that the Winthrop community trusts us enough to serve as its next campus leaders,” Pennington said. “We understand the responsibility that comes with the position, which we do not take lightly,” Williams added. “Looking back on our campaign journey, we were also extremely proud of the support and involvement from the community.”
Campaign events included tabling in the DiGiorgio Campus Center, securing a Winthrop discount at local ice cream shop PW’s (tying in with the PW initials), participating in a candidate debate, volunteering at the Manna House Food Pantry and hosting a popcorn bar.
The pair centered the campaign around the words “amplify, achievement, advance,” which they defined amplifying student voices, achieving objectives that enhance the Winthrop experience and advancing the student experience through positive impacts that continue into the future.
However, Pennington and Williams emphasized that no initiatives would be implemented without student input. Some ideas include hosting recurring opportunities for CSL and non-CSL students to serve in Rock Hill, calling it “Saturdays Are For Service,” and holding events focused on elections and voter registration to increase civic engagement.
