Anne Cushman, an English major from Raleigh, North Carolina, is one of more than
1,900 American citizens who will study, conduct research, and teach abroad through
the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional
achievement as well as record of service and leadership potential in their respective
fields.
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Winthrop University senior Anne Cushman has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award for an English Teaching Assistantship
for the 2017-18 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Cushman, an English major from Raleigh, North Carolina, is one of more than 1,900 American
citizens who will study, conduct research, and teach abroad in this next year through
the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on
the basis of academic and professional achievement as well as record of service and
leadership potential in their respective fields.
In her four years at Winthrop, Cushman has excelled in Winthrop's Honors Program; maintained a steady presence on both the Dean's List and President's List; and served
as a peer mentor, secretary of the Iota Mu chapter of Sigma Tau Delta national English
honor society, co-captain of the women's soccer team, and a member of the Student- Athlete Advisory Council. After her year of teaching in Thailand, Cushman plans to attend graduate school
to continue her studies of English literature and composition.
"Anne Cushman is exactly the kind of young woman we would want to represent Winthrop,"
said Gloria Jones, dean of University College. "She is smart, polite, athletically gifted, a recognized leader, and is quite humble.
We are very proud of her many accomplishments and are delighted that her work with
Leslie Bickford, director of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards (ONCA), has yielded this recognition for her and the university and has given her
this unique opportunity."

Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 370,000 participants-chosen for their academic merit and leadership

year to study, teach English, and conduct research annually in more than 140 countries
throughout the world.
