ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — The works of two Winthrop University fine arts professors
and a recent M.F.A. graduate will be part of a one-day exhibition entitled "Landscape to Skyscape." The exhibition will be on display Nov. 16 at the Longitude 80 Lounge of Evoke Restaurant in the Le Mridien hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Seymour Simmons, professor of fine arts, Seth Rouser '99, assistant professor of fine arts, and Foozhan Kashkooli ˜15, all have an affinity for depicting space in varying forms from traditional realism
to non-representational imagery.
Simmons' watercolor landscapes come from his years of travel to the Jura Mountains near the
French-Swiss border. Besides depicting specific scenes-landscapes with houses or villages-these
paintings represent the solidity of human life in this rugged environment. The exhibition
will also include a "Retirement Retrospective" for Simmons, who will soon retire, that will include a selection of drawings, paintings and prints
done over the past five decades.
By contrast, Rouser's oil paintings of cloudscapes give the viewer a sense of being groundless. Often
depicted with abstract choices in coloration and mark-making, Rouser's use of abstraction in conjunction with clouds offers a contemplative exploration
of this ever-changing subject.
Finally, Kashkooli captures the natural beauty of landscape in abstract form. Through the dynamic and
diverse play of line, color and shape, her paintings are alternately vibrant and calming
to reflect the qualities of her subjects.
The event is free and open to the public.
