A native of Massachusetts, Dr. Pretty has been at Winthrop since 1998, after three years as an instructor at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Pretty specializes in the history of Russia, especially the late imperial, revolutionary, and early Soviet periods (1881-1941). He also teaches courses on German, European, and world history. He has written on the development of the Russian working class,as well as on the uses of mass violence in Russian culture. He currently is writing a book about the murder of a factory director (an Englishman) in a Russian factory village by a crowd of his own workers in 1895. Among his publications are "The Saints of the Revolution" in Slavic Review (Summer 1995) and "The Cotton Textile Industry in Russia and the Soviet Union" in The Ashgate Companion to the History of Textile Workers, 1650-2000 (2010).
