Winthrop University offers undergraduate and graduate options that lead to initial teacher certification in mathematics or science.
Undergraduate Certification in Secondary Biology or Mathematics
Students in these programs earn an undergraduate degree in the content field while
completing coursework necessary to earn certification at the high school level. Winthrop’s
secondary teacher certification programs are known for excellence, extensive clinical
experience, and a focus on the importance of strong content preparation.
MAT-Accelerated
The MAT-Accelerated program allows individuals to earn an undergraduate degree in
biology, chemistry, or mathematics at Winthrop and then complete teacher certification
in one additional year at the graduate-level. The program is designed such that undergraduate
biology, chemistry, and mathematics majors complete the Educational Studies Minor with sufficient flexibility to pursue second minors, additional certification or
endorsement areas, complete more extensive research experiences, or study abroad.
Then these individuals complete the additional requirements for certification at the
graduate level. Thus Winthrop students pursuing this option earn both an undergraduate
content major and education graduate degree in no more than 5 years.
MAT–Traditional
The MAT-Traditional program is designed for individuals who have a) completed a content
degree in a field related to the area of certification, b) content requirements that
are not met through the undergraduate program, c) completed the undergraduate degree
more than one year before admission and/or d) completed undergraduate degrees at another
institution. This track provides flexibility for career changers that wish to enter
the teaching force after another career. Although the certification program is flexible
enough to allow individuals with a STEM degree to pursue certification, the WISE scholarship
can only be awarded to individuals that hold a STEM degree. If you are unsure of your
