WHEREAS, Winthrop University is committed to its mandate, unique among South Carolina's
public institutions of higher learning: to provide students with a "first-class" higher
education, adding features and programs "as the progress of the times may require";
and
WHEREAS, Winthrop University is committed to meeting the needs of today's students
and preparing the university and its transformational educational experience for the
challenges and opportunities of the future; and
WHEREAS, Winthrop University seeks to ensure sustainable funding to build endowed,
restricted and unrestricted gifts to provide profound, life-enhancing educational
experiences for generations to come; and
WHEREAS, Winthrop University seeks to achieve three objectives that will increase
awareness of, increase the number of people engaged with, and secure resources not
only for Winthrop students, faculty and staff but also the alumni and friends who
support the Winthrop Experience; and
WHEREAS, a comprehensive fundraising campaign will enable Winthrop University to make
substantial and significant progress towards meeting those objectives; and
WHEREAS, a comprehensive capital fundraising campaign in conjunction with the 125th
anniversary of the founding of Winthrop in 1886 will be an appropriate milestone for
celebrating the history and the future of the University; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Board of Trustees of Winthrop University is to support
and benefit Winthrop University;
THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the public phase of Distinction: The Campaign for
Winthrop be undertaken for the benefit of Winthrop University; and
LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that all gifts, pledges, and commitments in support of
the campaign be recognized and counted toward the overall goal amount; and
LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that the overall financial goal amount for the campaign
will be at least $50 million.
