WHEREAS, the mission of the Master of Arts in Teaching in chemistry degree program
is to prepare highly qualified chemistry teachers to enter high school classrooms
and laboratories; and
WHEREAS, local and state agencies have indicated a growing need for more chemistry
teachers; and
WHEREAS, having a regional reputation of excellence in teacher education enables Winthrop
University to broaden its offerings in graduate programs aimed at serving the needs
of the State of South Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the program will use the structure and faculty currently involved with traditional
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs and oneyear Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT1)
programs therefore no additional resources above student tuition and fees will be
required for this program; and
WHEREAS, like the mission of the University and its colleges, the mission of the MAT
and MAT1 chemistry programs is to provide high quality academic preparation for science
teachers with professional training to provide school districts and secondary students
with access to certified individuals uniquely qualified to teach in chemistry classrooms
across the state; and
THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF WINTHROP UNIVERSITY that
the Master of Arts in Teaching in chemistry degree (MAT) and (MAT1) programs be added.
