WHEREAS, Winthrop University has long offered degree programs in History and Political
Science that lead to Social Studies certification; and
WHEREAS, the proposed program in Social Studies Education will combine the existing
concentrations in teacher education from the existing majors in History and Political
Science into a single major; and provide additional opportunities for students to
focus on the subjects of economics, psychology, and sociology; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Education degree program
is to prepare highly qualified social studies teachers to enter the teaching profession;
and
WHEREAS, like the mission of the University and its colleges, the mission of the Social
Studies Education program is to provide high quality academic preparation for social
studies teachers with professional training to provide school districts and secondary
students with access to certified individuals uniquely qualified to teach in Economics,
History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology classrooms across the state;
and
WHEREAS, the proposed degree is consistent with Winthrop University's Mission Statement
wherein the University seeks to provide "personalized and challenging undergraduate,
graduate, and continuing professional education programs of national caliber within
a context dedicated to public service to the State of South Carolina";
THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Education,
with 7-12 Teacher Certification, be established.
