WHEREAS, Thomas Hickman served Winthrop Athletics for twenty seven years with twenty
of those years as athletic director, Winthrop University with grateful appreciation,
does hereby acknowledge, commend and honor Tom Hickman as the longest serving athletic
director in Winthrop and Big South Conference history; and
WHEREAS, Tom provided oversight to more than $20 million in new facility construction
and facility improvements as well as the addition of women's soccer, women's lacrosse
and men's and women's indoor track and field; and
WHEREAS, under Tom's leadership the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame was created as
a way to honor the individuals who left their mark on Winthrop's athletics program,
and to recognize the pioneers and leaders who have helped direct the successful evolution
of Winthrop athletics from its years as an all-female school, to a quality NCAA Division
I coeducational program; and
WHEREAS, during Tom's tenure, Winthrop has captured 48 Big South Championships and
made 48 NCAA team appearances, earned the Big South All-Sports Men's Cup, was awarded
the Kallander Cup four times by the Big South Conference for the community service
work by our student-athletes; and
WHEREAS, with his influence and guidance, our student-athletes consistently rank at
or near the top of the conference schools for academic achievement;
THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Winthrop University Board of Trustees and President
Mahony, on behalf of the students, faculty and staff at Winthrop University, do hereby
convey their deep respect and profound gratitude to Mr. Thomas Hickman, and do commend
him for his loyalty and service to Winthrop University.
