Burmeister, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, came to Winthrop in fall 1997. She was awarded Outstanding Junior Professor and Faculty Student Life Awards in 2000, and she is the recipient of more than 12 research grants and fellowships, including a West African Research Association grant (1999) and a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation grant (1995-96). Burmeister also served as guest curator of "Striking the Eye: Arts of West African Women" in 2003 at the Gaston College Jeanne Rauch Gallery in Dallas, N.C.
