Expanded Media offers an expansive view of art which is valuable and sought after
in the job market. It encourages collaboration between practitioners from different
disciplines and innovation by combining media and pushing the boundaries of what is
possible in the arts. Expanded media teaches skills in digital media such as video,
sound, installation, performance, 3D Modeling, digital fabrication and traditional
arts, but utilizes holistic thinking that asks artists to problem-solve by connecting
their work to ideas outside of art.
Through a series of conceptually-driven interdisciplinary courses, students will develop
proficiency in industry-standard creative software applications and pursue questions
and research about the intersection of art and technology, culture, and natural and
built environments. Students will acquire skills that support careers in fields such
as film, video, electronics, sound, installation, and emerging forms of media.
The Foundation Studies Program comprises a series of sequential courses taken by all B.F.A. in Art and B.A. in Art degree-seeking students. These courses occur during the first two consecutive semesters of a student's first year within the Fine Arts Department at Winthrop University. Concepts contained in these courses serve to educate the beginning student on broad issues concerning art and art history in order to adequately prepare them for their area of specialization.
