For years Rutledge was known as Carnegie Library, named for industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie who provided funds for its construction. It was renovated into a classroom building when Dacus Library was constructed in 1969. That same year, the building was renamed in honor of Mai Rutledge Smith Johnson, wife of founding president David Bancroft Johnson and descendant of South Carolina's first governor, Edward Rutledge, who signed the Declaration of Independence. A 1990 renovation recaptured the splendor of the building's Classical Revival style, which incorporates features of French Imperial design. Today the Rutledge Gallery and the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery are located in this building.

In conjunction with our Emergent Ecologies Exhibition, Winthrop Galleries is hosting a free program featuring performance art, scientific research, and Non-profit advocacy for environmentally distressed communities. This event will begin with an interdisciplinary performance by E.E. Balcos, Mark Leonard Lewis, and Claudia O'Steen. This will be followed by a presentation from Dr. Brent Woodfill on the human impact on the environment. The program will conclude with a talk by Jessi Lessenberry about A Place For Hope, a local non-profit dedicated to supporting our community.
