Winthrop’s Bachelor of Music Education degree prepares students to teach music at all levels, from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. This four-year program gives future teachers classroom experience beginning in the first year of study. A carefully planned course sequence provides experiences in applied study, ensembles, music theory and history, conducting, composition and arranging, and elementary and secondary music methods, culminating in two public school internships in the senior year. A close collaboration with Winthrop’s College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences allows future teachers to learn best practices in classroom management, assessment, and meeting the needs of English Language Learners and students with special needs.
Winthrop music education alumni are known across the southeast for their successful records as elementary music teachers, band directors, choral directors, and orchestra directors.
Our music faculty are dedicated to developing relationships with each of our students. Nearly 95 percent of the full-time music faculty hold the highest degree possible in their teaching specialty and perform professionally outside of the university and across the region.
