*The 1998-99 men's basketball team will become the 16th Team of Distinction to be inducted into the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame. This team made the first ever appearance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, posting a 21-9 record overall and 9-1 in the Big South Conference. During the preseason, the team was picked to finish last in the Big South.
Led by first-year head coach Gregg Marshall, the Eagles captured the program's first Big South regular season title and the second Big South Tournament title. This year marks the 25th anniversary of this team's accomplishments.
This team ignited an impressive championship run by the Eagles, who captured eight Big South Conference Championships over a 10-year span. Since that year, the Eagles have totaled 12 conference titles and played in the conference title game 16 times.
*Cari (Wooldridge) Moore `11 was a four-year standout for the Winthrop softball team. The three-time All-Big South selection played a key role in helping the team capture Big South Conference titles in 2007 and 2008. In 2007 the Eagle made their first ever NCAA Regionals appearance, making the regional final vs. #1 Tennessee. The Eagles returned to the NCAA Regionals in 2008. In 2007 and 2008, Moore pitched her way to Big South Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. She was voted to the Big South Conference All-Decade Team (2000-09). The 2008 NFCA All-Region selection still ranks among the Top 10 in a number of categories including shutouts (3rd), wins (4th), strikeouts (5th), and complete games (5th).
*John Godbold has been a proud supporter of Winthrop Athletics for many years. His contributions over the years have made improvements in the Athletic Training Room and locker room. President of Godbold Financial Services, he lives in Rock Hill.
