Beloved Winthrop Employee Passes Away This Week

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Debbie Cook, a custodian who worked in Tillman and McBryde halls, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 1, from complications from a short illness. She was 63 years old.

James Grigg, associate vice president for facilities management, said Cook joined Winthrop in 2019. She was proud of her work and was dedicated to taking care of her buildings and their occupants.

“She will be remembered for her smile and friendly greetings, her commitment to taking care of her buildings and serving those who were in them,” Grigg said in a campus-wide e-mail. “Debbie will be greatly missed by the Facilities Management team and all of those who were fortunate enough to know her.”

Some of Cook’s family members also work in Facilities Management.

Her colleagues remembered Cook for her love of reading and their discussions of books. They called her a positive and consistent worker who loved her family.

The family will have a visitation from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill.
