ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Vivian Howard, star of the PBS show "A Chef's Life,” will appear at the Dacus Friends of the Library annual meeting on Nov. 7 to share stories about her new cookbook.
The event is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Richardson Ballroom, DiGiorgio Campus Center.
Born in Deep Run, North Carolina, to tobacco and hog farming parents, Howard learned early on to appreciate the ebb and flow of eating with the seasons. Still, it took 23 years and a start in the advertising business to convince her a career in food was feasible.
In 2005, Howard and her now husband, Ben Knight, decided to open a farm to fork restaurant in the small town of Kinston, North Carolina.
“A Chef's Life” is a half-hour documentary and cooking series about Howard and Knight’s opening of a fine dining restaurant in her hometown.
Each episode follows Howard out of the kitchen and into cornfields, strawberry patches and hog farms as she hunts down the ingredients for her seasonal menus. She explores Southern cuisine, past and present, and reveals the action and drama of a high-pressure business with the joys and stresses of family life.
Season 5 came out in 2018 as Howard celebrated a decade of the series and went on a book tour to promote her first cookbook, now a New York Times bestseller.
Tickets are $50 and can be ordered here.
