Aug. 20 Convocation in Byrnes Auditorium. 
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Each year Winthrop University's incoming group of freshmen
boasts leaders, difference-makers, academic achievers and more.
President Dan Mahony and local and campus leaders welcomed the Class of 2022 at the Aug. 20 Convocation
in Byrnes Auditorium. Though the rain moved the campus picnic indoors, dreary weather
can't keep this outstanding class from shining.
Meet a few of the class' members:
*Bernard Hasan II of Columbia sang at Carnegie Hall this year.
*Catherine Condon of Pawleys Island was one of 20 students selected nationally for a summer camp experience
through the Teddy Roosevelt Wildlife Conservation.
*Kenneth "K.J." Adams of West Columbia competed at the International Thespian Competition.
*Benjamin "Ashby" Cartee and his sister of Inman started a "Cards for Veterans" organization, in which they
collect and deliver Christmas cards to inpatient veterans' hospitals, clinics and
nursing homes. Since 2011, they have collected and delivered approximately 165,000
cards.
*Catarina Gonzalez of Sumter helped organize an LGBT club at her high school.
*Nathan Kidd of Fort Mill has been on the Riverview Fire Department for several years. He was
named Firefighter of the Year in 2016 and has more than 300 fire training hours.
*Julia Breitkreutz of Rock Hill traveled to Washington, D.C., as a National History Day award winner.
*Thomas "Tommy" Fletcher of Myrtle Beach represented South Carolina at the National HOSA (Future Health Professionals)
Conference in Dallas.
*Victoria Moore of Simpsonville raises pygmy goats.

*Within the United States, Taylor Williams traveled the farthest to attend Winthrop — 4,674 miles from Kapolei, Hawaii.
*Outside of the United States, Geyi Chen traveled 8,340 miles from Shenzhen, China.
