ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA Winthrop University continuously reviews and updates its
special education program to make sure it's meeting the needs of the ever-changing profession. Students in the
program have access to many hands-on opportunities, including Study Abroad and the
university's Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) chapter.
That diligent work was fully displayed this month when Winthrop's chapter placed first
at the South Carolina CEC Annual Conference College Bowl, defeating other state schools
such as Clemson University and Coastal Carolina University.
Chapter President Madison Grant, of Camden, South Carolina, said she and her peers endured two rounds of 25 questions.
Topics included special education federal laws, evidence-based practices, disability
characteristics and pre-school disabilities.
Winthrop's chapter currently boasts 28 members. Any Winthrop student can join the
chapter after paying the $5 registration fee. The group typically meets once a month.
