The Richard W. Riley College of Education, S.C. Department of Education and the education
advocacy group TransformSC will host the event to inform others about updated teaching
practices, including new uses of technology to promote learning. The event will begin with interactive demonstrations from PK-12 students, area teachers
and Winthrop faculty. 
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Public school educators will flock to Winthrop University
on Jan. 19 to learn about the state's initiative to transform education and the new
"Profile of a South Carolina Graduate."
The Richard W. Riley College of Education, S.C. Department of Education and the education advocacy group TransformSC will host the event to inform others
about updated teaching practices, including new uses of technology to promote learning.
The event will begin with interactive demonstrations from PK-12 students, area teachers
and Winthrop faculty. "Community and education leaders from TransformSC, the S.C.
Department of Education and Winthrop University will address current challenges, initiatives
and successes," said Marshall Jones, a Winthrop education professor and senior director for learning technologies and
graduate studies in the College of Education.
Here is the Jan. 19 schedule for the event in the Richardson Ballroom, DiGiorgio Campus Center:
10:30-11 a.m. — Interactive demos by local PK-12 students and teachers,
and Winthrop faculty; and the Charlotte interactive learning museum, Discovery Place,
will be sharing 21st century learning strategies and activities. For instance, a Rock
Hill teacher will show how she uses the Settlers of Catan board game to teach students
how to work in groups to make decisions. A Winthrop faculty member will show how iPads
are used to teach. The Instructional Technology Center will demonstrate various technologies,
such as 3D printing and programmable robots used to teach students to code. And Discovery Place will show how it incorporates science, technology and math learning in the museum.
11-noon — Winthrop President Daniel Mahony and Education Dean Jennie Rakestraw will welcome guests and introduce speakers. State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman and Deputy Superintendent and Winthrop Board of Trustee Julie Fowler '85, '88 will present on State Department efforts to transform learning for students in our
public schools. Afterwards, Peggy Torrey, director of TransformSC, and Michael Brenan, S.C. president of BB&T, S.C. Board of Education member and co-chair of TransformSC,
will present on the mission and accomplishments of the state-wide TransformSC initiative.
The event is free and open to the public. Attending will be teacher and school leader
education majors, along with representatives from each of Winthrop's 45 Partnership
Network member schools, and partnering school district superintendents and liaisons.
