ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s student body has elected its Council of Student Leaders (CSL) chair and vice chair for the 2021-22 academic year: Erin Emiroglu (chair) and Miguel Caldwell (vice chair).

Although the duo ran unopposed, they captured approximately 500 student votes.

The two met when they both participated in the Emerging Leaders program and carpooled together.

“After meetings and conversations, we realized our thoughts and missions aligned perfectly, and that was the birth of Emiroglu-Caldwell,” said Caldwell, a sophomore elementary education major.

Their platform, “Elevate,” focuses on empowering others and refers to every sector of students’ lives, they explained: elevate their voices, their experiences and their lives on campus.

On their initial agenda: monthly town hall meetings that would bring in different campus organizations, such as Dining Services and the Winthrop University Police Department, to address questions, comments and concerns.

“We want students that voted for us to know that from the bottom of our hearts, we are grateful for them,” Caldwell said. “We're students just like them, and we will absolutely make it our mission to advocate for them just like we outlined in our platform. We understand that the students are who elected us and have supported us, and we will continuously make them our first priority.”

About Emiroglu:

As a political science major, Emiroglu has served in various leadership roles, including as current president of the College Democrats of South Carolina; a diversity peer educator; a voting ambassador; and active member of the Zeta Tau chapter of Alpha Delta Pi.
