The emeritus faculty members have contributed a combined 275 years of service to
Winthrop. The Division of Academic Affairs also presented the names of the seven faculty members
who earned tenure and 10 faculty members who earned promotion after an extensive review
process this year. 
Debra BoydROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Members of the Winthrop University Board of Trustees approved 10 faculty members for emeritus status and heard about the latest faculty tenure and promotions at the June 10 quarterly board meeting.
The emeritus faculty members have contributed a combined 275 years of service to Winthrop, according to Debra Boyd, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. Two professors — Irene Boland, a geology professor, and Paul Martyka, an associate professor of fine arts — were granted emeritus status posthumously
because they passed away during the academic year.
Those retiring and granted emeritus faculty status are: Charlie Bowers, professor of exercise science; Tim Boylan, professor of political science; Gary Brooks, professor of mathematics; Mark DeWalt, professor of education; Caroline Everington, professor of special education; Pedro Muñoz, professor of Spanish; William Naufftus, professor of English; and Mary Watson, an instructor with Macfeat Early Childhood Laboratory School.
The Division of Academic Affairs also presented the names of the faculty members who earned tenure or promotion after an extensive review process this year.
The seven faculty members granted tenure are: in the College of Arts and Sciences, Catherine Chang, history; Nicholas Grossoehme, chemistry; and Clara Paulino, interdisciplinary studies; in the College of Business Administration, Marguerite Doman, computer science; in the Richard W. Riley College of Education, Abbigail Armstrong, middle level education; and Daniel Drane, sport management; and in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Daniel Gordon, theatre.
There were 10 faculty members promoted to professor or associate professor. Promoted to the rank of professor are: in the
College of Arts and Sciences, Edward Lee, history; Guy Reel, mass communication; James Hanna, chemistry; Kristen Kiblinger, philosophy and religious studies; and Cheryl Fortner-Wood, psychology; in the Richard W. Riley College of Education, Jennifer Jordan, counseling; and in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Laura Gardner and Karen Stock, both fine arts.
Promoted to the rank of associate professor from assistant professor are: in the College
of Arts and Sciences, Kristen Abernathy, mathematics; and in the College of Business Administration, Marguerite Doman, computer science.
