ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University financial planning expert Philip Gibson has been selected as one of the 40 Under 40 who are positively impacting the industry by “InvestmentNews.”
Gibson, an associate professor of finance in the College of Business Administration, was chosen from a pool of nearly 1,000 nominees. “InvestmentNews,” the trusted resource for financial advisers, noted each nominee's level of accomplishment, contribution to the financial advice industry, leadership and future promise.
“When I got the news, I was extremely excited,” Gibson said. “It feels good, and I am honored to receive this award and be recognized among such an impressive group.”
“We are fortunate to have a professional of Dr. Gibson's caliber leading our financial planning program,” said P.N. Saksena, dean of the College of Business Administration. “He has worked tirelessly to build corporate partnerships for the benefit of our students, and our program is now ranked in the top 100.”
At Winthrop, Gibson heads the financial planning program. Under his leadership, the program has been recognized by “Financial Planning Magazine” as one of the top 95 in the nation educating the next generation of financial planners.
“I want to help more students and do more research to help our profession go forward,” Gibson told “InvestmentNews.”
He’s also led student teams to compete in the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators’ (NAGDCA) Retirement Knowledge Quiz Bowl and the National Financial Planning Challenge.
He conducts award-winning research in areas such as mutual funds and retirement; helps clients as an adviser at the Charlotte, North Carolina-based Carroll Financial; volunteers through the Association of African American Financial Advisors; and serves as a director and vice president of international relations for the Academy of Financial Services.
A native of Jamaica, Gibson moved to Houston, Texas, at a young age and attended Prairie View A & M on a tennis scholarship. He earned his Certified Financial Planning designation and Ph.D. from Texas Tech University. He previously taught at the University of the Incarnate Word.
