ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (SCAND) has selected Wanda Koszewski, chair of Winthrop’s Department of Human Nutrition, as its 2021 Outstanding Dietitian of the Year.
She received the award on April 16 at the 2021 Annual South Carolina Academy of Nutrition Dietetics Virtual Meeting in recognition of her professional accomplishments and her commitment to her field through her Catawba District and S.C. academy leadership.
Koszewski said she is very honored and humble to receive the award. “I am grateful that I get to work with such outstanding dietetic professionals in South Carolina. To receive this recognition from them is amazing. I feel that I need to share this with my fellow faculty in the Department of Human Nutrition who inspire me to excel in the dietetic profession,” she said. “I also want to recognize the amazing students I mentor and have mentored. I share this honor with them. They are my greatest legacy.”
Koszewski joined Winthrop as department chair in 2015. Her peers said she has brought an exceptional level of innovation to the department, while also remaining laser-focused on preparing students to become effective practitioners. Koszewski recently led the department through their reaffirmation and established the Food Box program to address food insecurity on campus, which is one of her research interests along with nutrition resiliency.
This work was done while serving as a mentor to a new cohort of faculty, teaching, and serving as a member of the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics board of directors.
