ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA -- The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation has awarded Winthrop University human nutrition graduate Lauren Wright with its Fuschia Lucille Johnson Memorial Scholarship.

Wright, of Columbia, South Carolina, will put the $2,500 award toward completing her dietetic studies, which will conclude this May. After earning her master's degree in August 2017, Wright rotated through several different nutrition sites in Columbia. She's currently completing the university's dietetic internship certificate program and will spend this spring as an intern at Palmetto Health Richland.

Wright applied for the scholarship early last year. In addition to being a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, the applicant must be enrolled in a program of graduate study in dietetics in a regionally accredited college or university with the intent to practice in the field of dietetics. Applicants are ranked in three categories: professional potential, academics and financial need.

The scholarship is named for Fuschia Lucille Johnson, a colonel who served in the military during World War II as an administrative dietitian with significant management responsibility.

Earning national and regional distinction for her studies isn't new to Wright. Just last year, she won the South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Outstanding Dietetics Student Award.

Wright hopes to work in public health nutrition after completing her studies.
