ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Winthrop alumni have chosen Jane Lawton LaRoche '69, '70 for a third term as the alumni representative for the Winthrop University Board of Trustees.
LaRoche, who will begin her six-year term on July 1, joined the Board of Trustees inJuly 2010. This spring, members of the Winthrop Alumni Association mailed in paper ballots
or voted online to fill the alumni representative seat.
The Camden, South Carolina, resident earned a B.A. in Spanish in 1969, followed by
a B.S. in physical education in 1970 from Winthrop and a M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1974. LaRoche works as an emergency room physician, and she has worked in private practice and
served as a medical section chief for the C.M. Tucker Jr. Human Resources Center in
Columbia, South Carolina. She is board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics
and emergency medicine. In addition, she has served as a clinical assistant professor
of medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
LaRoche has remained active with her alma mater, serving as a member of the Loyalty Fund
Committee and an Executive Board member of the Kershaw County Alumni Chapter. Winthrop's
Department of Physical Education, Sport, & Human Performance awarded her Distinguished Alumni honors in 2005. LaRoche previously established the Jane LaRoche Endowed Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction, which recognizes and rewards a faculty member who demonstrates dedication to teaching
as well as exemplary instruction in a graduate-level course.
