ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The S.C. Press Association recognized Johnsonian Editor Anna Sharpe this spring as its College Journalist of the Year.

In only her second year on Winthrop University’s student newspaper, the sophomore served as editor-in-chief in 2019-20.

“Anna was a clear winner in selecting our journalist of the year. Her work in student publications was outstanding,” said Bill Rogers, executive director of the S.C. Press Association. “She showed real leadership.”

Guy Reel, the newspaper’s advisor and chair of the Department of Mass Communication, nominated Sharpe for the award.

“Anna has been consistently outstanding in her writing, reporting and editing, and she has demonstrated a determination to fight for information, question authority and demand accountability from those in power,” Reel wrote in his nomination, in which he cited several examples where Sharpe had shown her reporting and editorial skills.

Reel said that under Sharpe’s leadership, the content of the newspaper has been serious, fun, entertaining and engaging.
