ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Winthrop University men’s golf team captured the program’s first Big South Conference Championship on Sunday, April 21, by defeating Gardner-Webb to earn the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Head Coach Kevin Pendley ’98 became the first former Big South individual champion (1997, 1998) to win a team championship as a head coach.
The Eagles endured two weather delays that lasted 96 minutes during the afternoon final. After play resumed following the second stoppage for lightning, Winthrop’s Ashton Eubanks clinched the deciding point with a 2&1 triumph over Jules Bondil in match three.
Winthrop reached the final game after defeating Radford earlier that day.
The Eagles will await their destination for the NCAA Regionals as the selection show will be Wednesday, May 1, at 2 p.m. on The Golf Channel.
