An awards ceremony capped two days of deliberations over world events and this year’s theme, “Promising a Future: Protecting the Planet, Preventing Conflict, Promoting Equality.”
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – A delegation from Catawba Ridge High School from Fort Mill, South Carolina, won top honors March 31 at the 47th annual Model United Nations conference at Winthrop University.
Held March 29-31, the program involved hundreds of high school students from 28 high schools across the Carolinas. An awards ceremony capped two days of deliberations over world events and this year’s theme, “Promising a Future: Protecting the Planet, Preventing Conflict, Promoting Equality.”
The overall award – the Winthrop Cup – went to Catawba Ridge which represented the Russian Federation.
The Secretariat Award went to the Summerville High School students who represented the country of Greece. The award is given to the delegation which contributed greatly to the conference, whether it be through inspiring other delegations to do their best or through displaying exceptional preparedness.
The Geoffrey Bruce Award for the delegation acting most in character of its country went to the Bishop England High School delegation representing France.
The Rookie Award was presented to Spring Hill High of Chapin, South Carolina.
Winthrop students recognized as outstanding advisors to their high school delegations or for exceptional work were: Shivani Dahya, Sera Crookes, Caden Johnson, Carsen Gamerl, Jaden Gamble, Cynthia Bruce, TJ Carbon, Stephen Magda, Cierra Haynes, Ella Miller and Ryan Noblett.
Various high school delegations also were recognized for writing outstanding resolutions for different committees.
This year’s Secretariat operated under the student leadership of Henry Waldrep, secretary general; Alyssa Robinson, director general; and Hannah Switzer, coordinator general. The three worked with their advisor, Professor Jennifer Leigh Disney, to organize the conference and coordinate Winthrop students’ participation.
