ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Professor Michael Lipscomb will join the Winthrop University Board of Trustees as the new chair of Faculty Conference.
The political science professor recently was elected by faculty members and will replace outgoing chair John Bird at the beginning of the new academic year in August. According to the faculty manual, the chair must be a full-time tenured faculty member and will serve as a non-voting board member.
One of his primary duties during Lipscomb’s two-year term will be to work with President Dan Mahony as he begins his third year in office.
Lipscomb specializes in modern and contemporary political theory and environmental politics. His scholarly work has appeared in the journals New German Critique and Administrative Theory and Praxis, as well as in the edited volumes Critical Ecologies and Women and Politics Around the World. He is also the co-author of “Breastfeeding Rights in the United States” (Praeger, 2007) with Karen Kedrowski, dean of Winthrop's College of Arts and Sciences.
Lipscomb is a dedicated teacher and was the 2007 recipient of Winthrop’s James Pinckney Kinard and Lee Wicker Kinard Award for Excellence in Teaching. His work on the Nature and Character of the University Task Force exemplifies his devotion to working with others to meet Winthrop’s ongoing challenge of continuing to provide a top-notch education for all students. A veteran teacher of The Human Experience course, Lipscomb has contributed to the development of the core general education class by training other professors and working with colleagues to design the course’s textbook.
Prior to coming to Winthrop in 2001, Lipscomb worked as an instructor at Pennsylvania State University, where he received his Ph.D. He also holds a master’s degree in political science from Virginia Tech and bachelors’ degrees in English literature from the University of Richmond and in political science from Virginia Commonwealth University.
