ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Ronnie W. Faulkner of Winthrop University's Dacus Library was recognized May 25 as "Rotarian of the Year" for his services to the Rotary Club of Rock Hill, including writing a history of
the organization.
This award is the most important distinction given annually by the club.
Faulkner, head of content services at Dacus Library, has been club secretary for the past
six years. He serves on the District 7750 scholarship committee and instituted the
first club matching program for The Rotary Foundation. Faulkner is a Paul Harris Fellow,
is a benefactor of The Rotary Foundation, and is the only Rotarian in the 99-year
history of the local club to be a Major Donor of the Foundation, which promotes world
understanding and peace through humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange activities.
In 2015 Faulkner was given a Winthrop Presidential Citation for Community Service, in large part owing to his work as a Rotarian. In that same year, he was appointed
club historian and is writing the centennial history of the Rock Hill club, which
will be published in 2018.
The Rock Hill club is one of the oldest Rotary clubs in South Carolina. The first
meeting of the group took place on December 12, 1918, and its first president was
David Bancroft Johnson, the founder and first president of Winthrop.
The presentation of the award at the Rock Hill Country Club was made by three former
winners of the distinction-incoming club president Jane Gorman, former president Frank Robards, and current president Lindsay Walker. District Governor Lance Young of Greenville, representing the 2,700 members of the 53 clubs in the Upstate, was
on hand to congratulate Faulkner.
Faulkner, who will retire from Winthrop in a few months, will be returning to his
home in Coats, North Carolina, and to membership in the Rotary Club of Lillington,
which he previously served as president. He is the son of the late Silas S. and Etheline
Carroll Faulkner of Coats.
