ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The S.C. Association for Educational Technology (SCAET) has awarded the 2020 SCAET Scholarship to Lauren Quesada, a Winthrop University senior working towards a B.S. in special education.

The SCAET Scholarship Program, established in 2009, is open to all students enrolled in teacher education or school librarian programs at S.C. higher education institutions. The goal of the $1,000 scholarship is to help deserving students with financial need to complete their teacher education or library science degree.

Although this year’s S.C. EdTech conference had to be postponed due to COVID-19 until next fall, the SCAET Board felt that it was still crucial to award a scholarship this year.

The SCAET Scholarship Selection Committee selected Quesada as the recipient of this year’s scholarship. Planning to graduate in May 2021, Quesada is from Bluffton, South Carolina, but now resides in Rock Hill.  When she graduates, she wants to work in a self-contained elementary classroom.

According to the recommendation letter included with Quesada’s scholarship application, a faculty member described her as a well-disciplined and industrious student. “She went well beyond the course requirements in the quantity and quality of her project through logging in a lot of extra research and attending all classes and internship hours,” according to the recommendation.

Throughout the course, Quesada demonstrated great perseverance and initiative. “If her performance in my classes is a good indication of how she would perform as a future educator, the support through the scholarship will be an extremely meaningful investment to prepare an exemplary teacher who will be a role model for many of her students,” the nomination said.
