ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA Winthrop University was awarded a $1,000 grant by the Arts Council of York County for the 2017-18 fiscal year.
Support for the grant is provided by the Arts Council of York County Small Grants Program, which receives funding from the Rock Hill A-Tax/Tourism Commission, the John and
Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC, the SC
Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The $1,000 grant supported the Winthrop Women's Coalition March 1 "Women in the Arts: A Panel Discussion." During a two-day stay, four women artists — painter/sculptor Audrey Flack, architect Cary Perkins, arts administrator Deborah
Obalil and "Shameless" actress Shanola Hampton '98 — taught master classes, hosted Q&A sessions, provided critiques of students' paintings
and spoke to an at-capacity crowd of students, faculty, staff, community members and
coalition members. The panelists described their career paths, discussed women's positions
in the arts and gave career advice.
"We're deeply grateful for the Arts Council of York County's support of this special
Winthrop Women's Coalition event," said Winthrop First Lady Laura Mahony, who established the coalition in 2017. "We were thrilled to bring in these four
artists and have them provide valuable insight into their experiences in the arts.
Exploring these in-depth topics, and many more, is why the Winthrop Women's Coalition
was proud to host this event. Providing students and members of the community with
an opportunity to meet women like Audrey, Cary, Deborah and Shanola is what the coalition
valuessharing and learning from other women's experiences, knowledge and expertise."
