ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Winthrop University Board of Trustees thanked two board members and the board’s most recent secretary for their outstanding service to the institution at the June 23 meeting.

Both Julie Gore Fowler ’85, ’88, and Timothy Hopkins ’83, ’85, ’00, are alumni who provided exceptional contributions during their board tenure. Fowler, who was the designee for eight years for former State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman, chaired the presidential search committee that brought President Edward Serna ’02 to serve as Winthrop’s 12th president.

Now the superintendent of Spartanburg School District Three, she worked in several different roles at the S.C. State Department of Education, at eight school districts and at Clemson University. She was replaced on the board this spring by Joel Hamilton ’06, a Rock Hill attorney.

Hopkins was first appointed by then Governor Nikki Haley as her designee and then continued as Governor Henry McMaster’s designee. In all, Hopkins served for 12 years.

The deputy superintendent for Kershaw County Schools served on a number of board committees, most recently as a member of the executive committee for his role as chair of the External Engagement and Athletics Committee. A dedicated alumnus, he is past president of the Kershaw County Alumni Chapter and has been appointed to the Alumni Association Executive Board and Foundation Board.

He received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Winthrop in 2013.

Hopkins’ replacement, Richard Lee ’82, began his term on June 1.

Board members approved a third resolution to honor Kimberly Faust, who was chief of staff, secretary to the Board of Trustees and vice president for university communications and marketing. Hired by President Anthony DiGiorgio in 2004, she worked closely with him and three other presidents until earlier this year.

She was granted tenure in sociology in 2012 and promoted from associate to full professor, and then was promoted to vice president in 2018. She joined the ranks of emeriti faculty during the June 23 meeting.

In addition to her work at Winthrop, she represented the university on the boards of the York County Council on Aging, United Way of York County and the Early Learning Partnership.
