ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — At its June 23 meeting, the Winthrop University Board
of Trustees unanimously re-elected its chairman, Karl Folkens '78, and its vice chair, Glenn McCall.
Both will serve one-year terms.
Folkens, an attorney in Florence, South Carolina, has served 19 years on Winthrop's Board
of Trustees, with five terms as board chair and six terms as vice-chair. He was first
elected to one of the Winthrop Alumni Association seats for a four-year term before
serving for the last 15 years - first in Congressional District 6 then, following
redistricting, in District 7. As chair, Folkens is an ex-officio member to the Winthrop
University Foundation Board of Directors.
McCall, elected as vice-chair of the Board of Trustees, is a retired senior vice president
of Bank of America, where he led the consumer customer behavior analysis group. The
Rock Hill resident was first appointed to the Winthrop board in 2011 as the Education
Superintendent designee. He was then legislatively appointed to an at-large seat in
2014.
Board of Trustee members also recognized the service of retiring board member Sue Smith-Rex, who retired from Winthrop's Richard W. Riley College of Education in 2002 after
working 23 years as a faculty member in curriculum and instruction. She has served
as a board member since 2005. The group also announced Smith-Rex's replacement, Sandra Stroman `73 and `76 of Chester, a retired teacher and consultant with SRS Educational Consulting.
In other board action, members:
* Recognized the service of John Bird, an English professor who as faculty chair served four years as the faculty representative
to the board, and Beth West, outgoing chair of the Council of Student Leaders and the student representative
to the board.
* Revised a 2000 board resolution affirming appropriate use of state funds to include
expenses related to personnel searches.
* Voted to approve new procedures for expenditures related to group travel.
