ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Family Day activities this year will highlight academics, entertainment and sustainability as Winthrop University families visit their students on Saturday, Oct. 5.
More than 1,000 family members are expected during the annual event, according to
Callie Smith, director of New Student and Family Programs.
“We love to show off our campus in October during what is a beautiful time of year
in Rock Hill. We have plenty of activities to help families enjoy their time with
their students,” Smith said. Keep track of what is happening with the social media
hashtag #WUFamilyDay2019.
Family Day will begin with a light breakfast and a meet and greet with Winthrop administrators in the West Center.
An academic showcase will follow at 10:30 a.m. at five different locations where families will learn about research opportunities, special projects and successes. Guests will then head to the front lawn of Margaret Nance Hall and enjoy a noon picnic and family-oriented activities. The rain location for lunch is the Richardson Ballroom and the West Center.
Afternoon activities from 2-5 p.m. include popular events: an Iron Chef cooking competition among family members in Thomson Cafe, a tree-planting across campus, music ensemble showcase at the Amphitheatre, trivia in the Campus Center and a battleship canoe competition in the West Center pool.
Elsewhere on campus, there will be an archives exhibit in the Little Chapel, rock climbing at the West Center, family competitions and a women’s soccer game. Off the main campus, participants can watch the U.S. Disc Golf Championship by the Winthrop Coliseum, visit Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill tour in York or explore Riverwalk near the Catawba River.
On the evening of Oct. 5, the Winthrop theatre and dance department will offer “The Addams Family: A New Musical” in Johnson Hall. Families also can view the movie “Aladdin” in the Campus Center.
