semester about how challenging their university is, how they learn with peers, their
experiences with faculty and the campus environment. 
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Winthrop University senior and first-year students will
receive e-mail invitations this week to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).
Students can use their preferred device, such as a smart phone, personal computer
or technology tablet, to complete the NSSE survey during the spring. Its questions will ask all seniors and first-year students registered
for the spring semester about how challenging their university is, how they learn
with peers, their experiences with faculty and the campus environment.
Provost Debra Boyd encouraged students to take the survey because of its importance to the university.
Past survey results have helped Winthrop improve the learning experience for students
and to evaluate global learning, community service and civic engagement initiatives.
The survey also provides feedback on how students develop employer-desired skills
like critical and creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork, personal and social
responsibility, and appreciation for diversity. In 2014, Winthrop senior NSSE respondents
reported higher rates of participation in undergraduate research, internships, service
learning and culminating senior experiences compared to their national peers.

Since 2010, Winthrop's transparency and use of its NSSE results have been featured
in national monographs, on the national NSSE web site and in the June 2013 NSSE institute
newsletter.
