ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Would you sign up for a seasonal hunting service that
brings the goods right to your doorstep?
The Winthrop University entrepreneurial team of Eric Hammett, Tyler Morris and James Thomasson thinks you would. The trio's hunting delivery idea, Nature Calls, won first prize at the Rock Hill Shark Tank. This was the second annual business
model competition from the Technology Incubator at Knowledge Park.
With the $1,500 prize in hand, the trio also won the chance to work with the Technology
Incubator over the summer to further research Nature Calls' viability.
Hammett, a business administration major from Gaffney, said he, Morris and Thomasson
came up with the idea after noticing almost anything can be delivered nowadays, such
as the Dollar Shave Club. Morris and Thomasson are business administration majors
from Charleston and York, respectively.
"We all grew up hunting, and we knew we would like to have hunting goods delivered
to us instead of having to run to the local sporting goods store at least once a month,"
Hammett explained.
Here's how Nature Calls works, as they envision it: Active hunters would log online
to the company website and fill out a brief survey asking questions such as which
seasons they hunt. They can then sign up for a one-, three-, six-, nine- or 12-month
service that would deliver appropriate products and goods to their front door. Subscribers
could also purchase goods directly from the site.
The trio envisions Nature Calls servicing only South Carolina, but would be willing
to expand the service to other states if they saw success.
Although Hammett won first place last year with a different group, he said this year's
competition was at a higher level.
"Winning first place was an incredible feeling," Hammett said. "We were so thrilled
to finish first and to have the opportunity to work with the Technology Incubator
over the summer. We cannot thank Winthrop University and the Technology Incubator
enough for allowing us to participate in such an amazing experience."
