ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s 24-hour giving day event, beginning
at noon on April 25 and ending at noon on April 26, will champion supporters to show
their pride (Bleed Garnet) and give back (Give Gold) to the university.
The fundraising celebration aims to strengthen Winthrop’s donor community, a vital
part of advancing resources, programs and opportunities for students and educators.
Fundraisers have set a goal of inspiring 700 donors to give back this year, which
will help “unlock” more funds for the university via creative donor challenges and
matching gifts. They include:
*President Edward Serna ’02 and First Lady Lauren Serna will match gifts to the Winthrop Scholarship Fund up to $5,000 total.
*Reaching 700 donors will unlock a $20,000 gift generously provided by Arpit ‘07 and Erin Patel ’07, ’09.
*50 donors to the Richard W. Riley College of Education will unlock $10,000 from an anonymous donor and $500 from College of Education Dean Beth Costner.
*50 donors to the College of Arts and Sciences will unlock a $1,000 gift from John Winthrop, a direct descendant of the university’s namesake, and $1,000 from Kay Creamer ’71. Just 15 donors will unlock $500 from Dean Takita Sumter.
*50 donors to the College of Business Administration will unlock an extra $1,000 from Dean P.N. Saksena.
*A matching gift of up to $20,000 will be provided to the Fountain Restoration Fund from Winthrop friend and donor Jo Sherill Dickert and retired faculty members Gay Randolph '72 and Bob Breakfield.
*A matching gift of up to $5,000 will be provided to the honors program and undergraduate research from retired University College Dean Gloria Jones ’84 and husband John.
As in past years, donors will be able to give to designated areas that mean the most
to them. That includes student scholarships, athletic programs, academic colleges
and departments, and other programs like undergraduate research.
