ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – South Carolina’s oldest CROP Walk will take place Sunday, Nov. 1 in what is the event’s 43rd anniversary. The event is typically held on Winthrop University's campus, but this year there will not be a large group walk so participants are encouraged to walk individually or teams may gather together safely outdoors to walk.
Liz Porter, event coordinator and a kindergarten teacher at Macfeat Laboratory School at Winthrop University, said this year’s York County CROP Hunger Walk will be held virtually due to COVID-19.
Participants are encouraged to register online at crophungerwalk.org/rockhillsc. The walk will kick off on Facebook Live at 3 p.m. on Nov. 1.
CanStruction, a competition encouraging groups to create sculptures out of canned food items, will again be a part of this year’s festivities. Teams are encouraged to post a picture of their CanStruction display on the York County CROP Walk Facebook page and people are encouraged to vote for their favorite display.
The creations are made by youth groups, college student groups and other groups participating in the walk. After the walk, the canned food items will be donated to local food pantries.
York County’s CROP Hunger Walk has raised more than $800,000 in 41 years, with more than $200,000 remaining with local agencies.
Funds from this year’s walk will support the local efforts of Pilgrims’ Inn, Tender Hearts Ministries and the Clover Area Assistance Center.
CROP Walk is the community hunger appeal of Church World Service. The organization represents 36 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican churches in the United States working with indigenous churches and organizations in more than 80 countries.
