Dear Campus Community:
As a follow up to my message last week, I want to thank all of you who embraced your civic duty and voted in this election cycle. Our campus has always been a place where engagement and conversation matters, and all of us have a role to play in making our voices heard. We know that it may take some time to find out the results from this election. I urge all of you to practice patience throughout this process. This is likely some of our students’ first election, and we want it to be a positive experience.
To ensure that we take advantage of the educational opportunity this election provides, Katarina Moyon, director of the West Forum and co-director of HMXP, and ZaDonna Slay, social work instructor, are working on a post-election panel discussion for Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m. They will be joined by Sarah Hopkins also of social work and Brandon Ranallo-Benavidez of the political science department. The event will cover what we know about the election results to date, how the results may be impacting various constituencies, and positive strategies for navigating the post-election climate. This will be a Zoom event; tune in here. There will be time for Q&A and for students to ask questions or offer their perspectives. Additional details on this event will reach students through email.
As noted previously, whether due to the stress of the elections or due to the challenges of dealing with COVID-19, the Office of Diversity & Student Engagement will offer virtual group discussions through office hours as needed, and Counseling Services will be available to students. Employees may use the Employee Assistance Program. Dr. Moyon also has shared a number of resources through the daily email digests for both students and faculty/staff.
We value our inclusive environment where critical thinking and listening to opposing voices is a vital part of the Winthrop experience. We are better as a community for this environment. Thank you for your participation in the election process.
