WHEREAS pursuant to S.C. Code Ann. §59–125–1, et. seq., the Board of Trustees of Winthrop University is created and established as a body corporate for the purpose of effectuating the educational mission of Winthrop University.
WHEREAS Peter Joseph Judge, Ph.D., has been a dedicated member of the Winthrop University faculty since 1999, serving with distinction in multiple leadership roles including Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies (2006-2021), Interim Chair of the Department of Mass Communication (2015-2016), and Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (2011-2013).
WHEREAS, Dr. Judge has contributed significantly to the academic community through his teaching of biblical courses in the religious studies curriculum, as well as courses on early Christian thought and literature, and has been a passionate advocate for international education, encouraging students to study or travel abroad and leading courses that included travel opportunities to countries such as France and Israel.
WHEREAS his research has focused on the study of the New Testament Gospels, and he is currently working on a book entitled “What the Bible Says About Suffering,” in addition to having given numerous scholarly presentations, written book reviews, and provided extensive service and committee work at Winthrop University.
WHEREAS Dr. Judge has demonstrated outstanding academic achievements, having earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy/theology from St. John Vianney Seminary in New York, a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in theology/religious studies from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
WHEREAS Dr. Peter Joseph Judge, a native of the Buffalo, New York area and a resident of Rock Hill, has, in an exemplary display of dedication and commitment, come out of retirement to serve as Interim Provost of Winthrop University from July 2022 to January 2024. In this role, he provided critical leadership during a transitional period, guiding the university with wisdom, stability, and a deep understanding of its mission and values, thereby ensuring the continued success and academic excellence of the institution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Winthrop University Board of Trustees expresses its deepest gratitude to Dr. Peter Joseph Judge for his unwavering dedication, exceptional service, and significant contributions to the academic and campus community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Trustees extends its best wishes to Dr. Judge and his wife, Christina, as they embark on the next chapter of their lives, acknowledging their profound impact on Winthrop University and the broader academic community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary to the Board of Trustees shall certify that the Winthrop University Board of Trustees approved this resolution on the 27th day of June 2024, in a regular meeting scheduled by the Winthrop University Board of Trustees. Such resolution shall be maintained and publicly posted by the Secretary of the Board in a time and manner as required by law.
