Designed to blend with Kinard Hall's Neo-Georgian style, the permanent work is a seating area designed by graduate Keith Walters. The physical aspects of the project reference the historic fencing and building styles at Winthrop. The primary elements are a curved brick wall that rises from the earth and returns to grade at the end of its length, and a clustering of decorative brick columns that define a loose, but intimate space.
Built by Leitner Construction Company, the public art project inspired company co-owners Mac Leitner and his late brother, Jimmy, to offer a generous gift equivalent to the project’s construction cost. Over the years, the company has completed numerous improvements on Winthrop’s campus, including Owens Hall and Carroll Hall. Leitner’s latest major project is the DiGiorgio Campus Center.
