Piedmont Wetlands Research Area

In partnership with Rock Hill School District 3, Winthrop initiated the Piedmont Wetlands Project during the summer of 2004. The 1.1-acre area adjoins Winthrop Lake and offers research opportunity for students of all ages and a glimpse of the fast-disappearing Piedmont wetlands. A small island was incorporated to serve as a nesting ground for many area birds including the great blue heron, the little blue heron, the green heron, Canada geese, and song sparrows. Additionally, Winthrop biology faculty and students planted grass as well as 14 species of trees and 10 shrubs to help re-establish plant life typically found in Piedmont wetlands areas. The collaborative project not only provides study opportunity for area teachers and students but also improves the overall health of Winthrop Lake.
