Winthrop’s outdoor amphitheatre was the principal location for the May Day celebration, an annual tradition begun in 1929 and popular throughout Winthrop’s years as a women’s college. On the first Saturday in May, hundreds of Winthrop parents, alumni, students, and townspeople filled the amphitheatre’s brick tiers to see the 16-member May court. The amphitheatre now is used primarily as a performance venue.
