ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Three finalists for the dean of Winthrop University's School of Graduate, Continuing and Online Education position will visit the campus between March 26 and April 7.
Each candidate will participate in interviews with faculty, staff, administrators and students. They also will give a public presentation to the campus and interested community members in Whitton Auditorium in Carroll Hall.
The finalists are:
*Russell (Russ) Mayer, interim assistant vice provost of educational effectiveness and assessment at Loyola
Marymount University.
He has held previous roles as interim vice president and chief learning officer at
St. Joseph’s College and provost and vice president for academic affairs at Marian
University. As part of his March 26 visit, he will give a public presentation at 2:30
p.m.
*Melissa McCartney, founding dean of the Graduate School and associate provost for digital learning, chief online officer at Queens University. She also served as doctoral programs dean and in other positions at the University of Phoenix. During her March 31 visit, she will give her presentation at 2:30 p.m.
*Jason Craig, associate provost for online and graduate education at Marymount University.
He has worked at Marymount since 2000 in various roles, including his first role to
develop an orthopedic physical therapy program. He will visit Winthrop on April 7
and offer his presentation at 2:30 p.m.

Beth Costner, dean of the Richard W. Riley College of Education, Sport and Human Sciences, is leading the seven-member search team. “These three candidates, who were selected from an impressive pool, have been invited to visit Winthrop and share their past experiences and innovative approaches on how they can positively impact this institution,” she said.
Winthrop’s School of Graduate, Continuing and Online Education serves students who are seeking to earn a graduate degree and oversees the Winthrop Elevate program, a hub for Competency-based Education on campus. Within the school is the Office of Continuing and Professional Education, which exists to help adult learners and professionals attain the credential that they seek to achieve their academic, career and personal goals. The Office of Online Learning also is housed in the school and serves faculty, staff and student users of the Blackboard learning management system.
In addition, the school’s staff recruits graduate students, supports them through the application process, manages graduate assistantship and scholarship applications, organizes graduate Commencements and maintains graduate student records.
