ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLNA - Winthrop University social work graduate students rated
their social work education as among the top in the country, according to graduateprograms.com.
The online site recently announced its 2016 rankings of top social work graduate programs based on student ratings and reviews from current
and recent graduate students. Winthrop ranked 23rd in the nation and was the only South Carolina social work program in the top 50 rankings. Rankings
cover a variety of areas such as academic competitiveness, career support, financial
aid and quality of networking opportunities.

"Winthrop's graduate social work program has been one our most popular and successful
since its inception a decade ago," said Jack DeRochi, dean of Winthrop's Graduate School. "Our social work faculty have done an excellent job in preparing its master's level
students for work in non-profit organizations, government agencies, schools and in
business. We're proud to see their hard work and commitment to their students rewarded."
The Department of Social Work is nationally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The department initially offered the Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1974 and
it began offering the Master of Social Work degree in 2006. The master's program
offers both full-time and weekend options for completing the graduate degree. The
program also offers a concentration in empowerment practice which incorporates the
use of advanced social work theories and methodologies for culturally relevant assessment,
intervention, and evaluation at multiple levels of complexity and across systems in
order to promote human and social well-being. Empowerment practice affirms the strengths
and capabilities of people, values human diversity, and promotes social and economic
justice.
Lindsey M. Hesketh said she has appreciated her time as a graduate student in Winthrop's social work
program. "The professors are incredibly invested in my learning and are highly-qualified
to teach," Hesketh said. "The field staff have been accommodating to my unique circumstances
and gone above and beyond to support me. I look forward to attending each class and
value the quality of education that I am receiving from this program."
