ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Spain delegation from Marvin Ridge High School won top honors April 4 at the 49th annual Model United Nations conference at Winthrop University.
Held April 2-4, the program attracted hundreds of students from 25 high schools across the Carolinas and Georgia. An awards ceremony capped two days of deliberations over world events and this year’s theme, “Parting Ways With Neo-Colonialism: Ensuring Global Achievement through Development for All.”
The overall award – the Winthrop Cup – went to the Waxhaw, North Carolina, public school.
The Secretariat Award went to the Summerville High students who represented the member state of Malta. The award is given to the delegation which contributed greatly to the conference, whether it be through inspiring other delegations to do their best or through displaying exceptional preparedness.
The Geoffrey Bruce Award for the delegation acting most in character of its country went to the North Central High School delegation from Kershaw, South Carolina, representing Hong Kong.
The Rookie Award was presented to Lakeside High School from Evans, Georgia, who represented Indonesia, Mexico, Netherlands, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.
Winthrop students recognized for their performance during the opening night General Assembly collegiate debate were: Alex D’Addario, Adam Leger, Siri Burke, Mercedes Hernandez, Renesmee Coffey, John Landon Polasky and Logan Howard.
Various high school delegations also were recognized for writing outstanding resolutions or for exceptional debate and diplomacy in one of the different committees.
This year’s Secretariat operated under the student leadership of Donald Horack, secretary general; TJ Carbon and Caden Johnson, directors general; and Stormy Brown, coordinator general. Political Science Professor Jennifer Leigh Disney directed the group as it organized the 450-person conference and Winthrop students’ participation.
