Welcome Week 2018 Greets Students With a Circus, a Disco, a Magician and More

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA Winthrop University's Welcome Week guarantees one thing: whether you're a freshman, returning student, faculty, staff or community member, you'll have a great time!

The DiGiorgio Student Union (DSU) has prepared an action-packed line-up this year, including a silent disco party, West Fest, comedians, a circus and more. Students will also be welcomed to campus with the annual Convocation address and picnic. In addition, the Office of New Student and Family Programs and the Office of the First-Year Experience will host several signature events welcoming new students to campus. 

Welcome Week will run Saturday, Aug. 18 through Sunday, Aug. 26. All events are $5 w/ a Winthrop ID, $7 without or free with the purchase of a DSU pass unless otherwise noted. You can purchase a DSU pass online.

All freshmen and new transfer and adult students have mandatory meetings during the week. These are also listed on the app based on population, and these events are geared to aid your transition to Winthrop by starting you off on the right foot. 

Imagine Circus
Saturday, Aug. 18, 8 p.m.
Byrnes Auditorium
This special production company puts on circus-like productions featuring aerial dancers, acrobats, jugglers, mimes, stilt-walkers and more. Cultural event. 

Headphone Disco
Sunday, Aug. 19, 9 p.m.
Richardson Ballroom
See what the "Silent Disco experience" is all about at this event, where people dance to music played through wireless headphones.

Convocation
Monday, Aug. 20, 3 p.m.
Byrnes Auditorium, then proceed to the Margaret Nance lawn
Free
President Dan Mahony and local leaders will welcome new students to campus in a special address. President Mahony and First Lady Laura Mahony will then lead the Blue Line of students to the Convocation picnic, where there will be free food, a DJ, a station where you can create your own street sign and notebook, and tables from local vendors and student organizations.

Cards Against Hypnosis
Tuesday, Aug. 21, 7:30 p.m.
Byrnes Auditorium
In this interactive, laugh-out-loud funny show that plays on the popular game "Cards Against Humanity," magician David Hall's performance goes like this: in between skits, he tosses a ball into the audience. Whoever catches the ball will be shown two large cards with a scenario and possible outcomes. Whichever skit the audience member decides on will be performed by the hypnotized participants on stage.

Leroy Sanchez Live
Thursday, Aug. 23, 8 p.m.
Amphitheatre
Born in Spain, self-taught guitarist Leroy Sanchez has earned more than 400 million YouTube views with his videos, which caught the eye of a music producer. Cultural event. 

West Fest
Friday, Aug. 24, 9 p.m.
Free
Check out the West Center and enjoy food, games, giveaways, competitions and music.

Avengers: Infinity War

Saturday, Aug. 25, 8 p.m.
Dina's Place

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Captain America, Black Panther and more heroes unite to battle the evil Thanos and save the world. See this blockbuster on the big screen.

Comedy Night featuring Chase Anthony and Morgan Jay
Sunday, Aug. 26, 8 p.m.
Tillman Auditorium
Chase Anthony, who spent the last year as Sinbad's opening act, uses his comedy to share a unique perspective on life. Morgan Jay is a skilled stand-up comedian and musician who serenades audiences. They team up for this comedy night. Cultural event.

Celebrate Night No. 1 of the next 261 days of your life with this kick-off.

Rock the Hill
Saturday, Aug. 18, 2 p.m.
Coliseum
The Class of 2022 will travel to this pep rally-style event, where students will learn chants for upcoming sports game, learn about the student section and have the opportunity to win prizes. You'll also take a huge "WU" photo with your peers on the Coliseum lawn. 

Winthrop Day at Carowinds
Saturday, Aug. 25, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
Join the Winthrop family for a fun-filled day at Carowinds! All students, faculty, staff and alumni receive a special admission price of $39, which includes parking and admission to the water park. Go to www.carowinds.com/save and enter the user name "Winthrop" and password "Eagles" for the discount. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
