ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University Esports took home all four titles at the 2025 Big South Esports Championship March 29-30, continuing to make a name for itself in the gaming industry. They placed first in Rocket League, Overwatch, VALORANT and League of Legends.
Winthrop Esports played an additional role as host for the championship event, which was held at the Winthrop Esports Center in the Lowenstein Building.
Four Big South Conference schools competed in the tournament — Winthrop, UNC Asheville, Radford and High Point — and waged battles in two days of intense competition.

Winthrop Esports Accolades
These latest Big South Championship titles add to an already impressive list of esports awards and accomplishments. Additional recent accolades include:
Esports Coach Josh Sides recently took home Director of the Year at the inaugural Scholastic Esports Awards.
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team captured the Luminosity 2025 Collegiate Crews Championship in February 2025.
The Overwatch and VALORANT teams took a championship each at DreamHack in October 2024, defeating 17 other teams. This was the VALORANT team’s second consecutive year winning this championship.
The League of Legends team won the HUE Fest National Tournament for the second year in a row, defeating Ole Miss in the Grand Finals during the September 2024 tournament.
The Super Smash Bros team won Riptide’s Collegiate 4x4 Crews National Tournament at Michigan State University in September 2024.
The Super Smash Bros. and League of Legends teams won national championships at the Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup (CECC) and the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) competitions in Arlington, Texas. Winthrop also received the CECC School of the Year Award.
