When to Contact the Ombuds Office

At some point during employment you may have a need to discuss a concern or problem “off the record” with a neutral party to develop perspective and identify the right course of action.  Topics you may want to discuss could involve conflicts with co-workers or supervisors; communication problems; concerns about job status and work environment; and questions about what options are available for handling a problem according to Winthrop policy.  Additionally, you may wish to inquire about available resources, reality check your perspective, or request information about the rights and responsibilities of all parties.  Topics to discuss with the Ombuds might include:

  • Interpersonal difficulties with colleagues, supervisees, or supervisors
  • Departmental and interdepartmental conflicts
  • Preparing for a difficult conversation
  • Harassment or discrimination
  • Violations of university policy
  • Academic freedom and integrity
  • Health and safety concerns
  • Bureaucratic frustrations
  • Workplace disputes
  • Ethical dilemmas
  • Conflicts of interest
  • Disciplinary actions
  • Incivility or rudeness
  • Unprofessional conduct
